Shannon was born in Ottawa, raised in Ajax and Whitby, and graduated from Henry Street High School in Whitby in 1991.  She started precision skating with the Whitby Ice Angels in 1987 and advanced to the Ice Fyre in 1989, winning a Canadian Championship that year and again in 1990.  Shannon studied at the University of Toronto and graduated with a Pharmacy degree in 1995.
