Paul was born in Whitevale in 1940 and moved to Whitby in 1955. He began his lacrosse career in 1953 and in 1955 was with the OLA Intermediate “A” Champion Whitby Merchants. He was a member of the 1960 OLA Junior Champion Hillcrest Dairy team that was the Minto Cup finalist that year. In 1966, he joined the Brooklin Redmen, acting as captain of the Mann Cup finalists 1967 and the Mann Cup Champions in 1968 and 1969.
Paul excelled in a number of sports including hockey, track and field and football. He also played hockey with future Toronto Maple Leaf Eddie Shack while auditioning for the Guelph Biltmores in 1954.
