Born in Whitby in 1927, Les resided in the town his entire life until his death in 1982. He attended King Street Public School and Whitby High School. From there, he went on to Trade School and became a plumber, and was eventually employed by General Motors in Oshawa.
Throughout his life, Les had a strong interest in hockey and when he was not playing, he could still be found at the arena. In the summer months, he was involved with the game of lacrosse and enjoyed several seasons playing in Brooklin. In 1967, he coached the Oshawa Green Gaels to a Minto Cup Championship.
During his full-time employment at General Motors, Les worked as a part-time scout for the National Hockey League, and in 1968, he decided that hockey was what he truly enjoyed and he became a full-time scout. The teams that employed him throughout his scouting career were the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Philadelphia Flyers and Atlanta Flames, and this path ultimately led him to work with the NHL Central Scouting group.
