Gayle was born in Scarborough and moved to Whitby at the young age of 4. She began skating with the Whitby Precision Skating Teams in 1984, performing with the Pre-Novice and Novice teams as well as the Senior Ice Fyre team, and concluding her career in 1992.

Gayle is a graduate of Henry Street High School and the University of Toronto.
