Lloyd was born in Pickering in 1928 and received his elementary education in Pickering Township. At the age of 13, his family moved to Greenwood and Lloyd spent the next few years working on the family farm.
Lloyd was an excellent hockey player, honing his skills on frozen ponds and creeks in the Pickering area. He was also a very accomplished fastball pitcher.
In addition to playing for the Champion Red Wing team in 1945-46, Lloyd was a member of the Ontario Finalist Stouffville Junior C Club in 1946-47. He joined the Markham Millionaires in 1947-48 and helped take Claremont to the Stouffville Community League Championship in the mid-1950’s.
