Norman was born in Grafton in 1903 and attended elementary schools in Newcastle, Cannington, and Norwood.  The family moved to Oshawa in 1919, where Norman attended secondary school, then moved again in 1927, this time to the Whitby area property that was known as Red Wing Orchards.

Norman played lacrosse in his teens and twenties and toured the USA with the University of Toronto lacrosse team.  Norman’s love of sport was always present, as seen by his time spent coaching and managing Peewee hockey teams during the 1940’s.  He was also a prime mover in the development of the new arena at Green and Gilbert Streets in Whitby.

In addition to sponsoring the 1945-46 Red Wing Junior C championship hockey team, Norman provided sponsorship to the Allan Cup Champion and World Champion Whitby Dunlops hockey team, and was an avid supporter of the Oshawa Green Gaels Lacrosse Club as well as the Brooklin Redmen Senior Lacrosse Club.

Norman’s life achievements included his selection as the Whitby Citizen of the Year (the Peter Perry Award) in 1962.
