Jim Hinkson was born on a farm in Oshawa in 1943. He gained his early education from several public schools in Oshawa before entering high school at Central Collegiate. He graduated from waterloo Lutheran University in 1968 with a B.A. in Psychology and from the University of Western Ontario in 1971 with a diploma of education. His lacrosse career began at the age of 19 after playing rugby for the Oshawa Vikings. Jim played lacrosse for 12 years and in 10 Championship series. As an athlete his accomplishments include: 2 Jr. “A” Canadian Championships with the Oshawa Green Gaels, Mann Cup Finalist with the Brooklin Redmen in 1965, OLA Sr. “B” Eastern Ontario Finalist with the Oshawa Lasco Steelers in the 1963-64 season, National Lacrosse Association Finalists at the Detroit Olympic in 1968, Provincial Lacrosse Association Championship with the Peterborough Lakers in 1969, Playing-coach with the Sr. Canadian Campion Windsor Clippers in 1970, Playing-coach with the Sr. Canadian champion Windsor Warlocks in 1971 and 1973, National Lacrosse League Finalist with the Philadelphia Wings in 1974, Played for Canada at the World Field Lacrosse Championships in Melbourne, Australia in 1974. Jim also played hockey as a goaltender with the Whitby Mohawks of the Metro Jr. “A” league and had try-outs with the Niagara Falls Flyers of the OHA, in addition to playing high school and university rugby. Jim has also had a great coaching career spanning from 1965 through 2005 accumulating the following achievements: Jr. “B” Canadian Finalist with the Whitby Lasco Steelers in 1965, the Philadelphia Wings of the NLL in 1975, Jr. “A” Finalist with the Whitby CBC Builders in 1978, Jr. “A” Minto Cup Champion Whitby CBC Builders in 1980, All Ontario Whitby Midget “B” Finalists in 1998. Jim also coached the St. Catharines Majors of the Ontario Lacrosse Association in 1999, the Toronto Jr. “A” Beaches team in 2000-2001 when he was awarded Coach of the Year Honours, the New Jersey Storm of the NLL in 2002, the Vancouver Ravens of the NLL in 2003, the St. Catharines Athletics Major lacrosse team in 2004 and the Akwesasne Thunder in 2005. His lacrosse coaching career at the Jr., Sr., and professional level extended over 13 years. Jim also coached basketball for 25 years where his high school teams won championships in 1987 and 1988. Additionally, Jim worked at several university and pro basketball camps in Canada and the U.S. He is also an accomplished author of 5 books on lacrosse, the latest being completed in 2003.
